A police officer for 33 years, Mark Stokes then served as a war crimes investigator, university lecturer and Secured by Design consultant. He joined British Transport Police in 2016, managing a team of six Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) covering the railway networks of Scotland, Wales and much of England

      In Japan they have trialled using blue light to dissuade suicide attempts on their rail system. Mark Stokes of the British Transport Police will discuss the limitations on the effectiveness of light in such and similar applications (e.g. intravenous drug injection; young people congregating), combined with the necessity to maximise appropriate lighting to secure maximum quality CCTV images for both investigative and evidential purposes.
