Lee Chapman, Professor in Climate Resilience at the University of Birmingham Lee Chapman is a Professor in Climate Resilience at the University of Birmingham and is particularly interested in the influence of weather and climate on the built environment. He has published in excess of 70 academic journal articles in areas covering infrastructure meteorology, urban climatology and climate change.

A key specialism is winter road maintenance and in addition to being the former president of the Standing International Road Weather Commission, he has successfully commercialised a number of products for the sector. His latest venture is using the Internet of Things to transform winter resilience.

      Snow joke – Street lights’ role in weather response

      Sensors in public lighting can assist local authorities in monitoring and reacting to weather-related issues such as flooding, air pollution and snow. In one application in Hampshire, the street lights tell the local council which frozen roads need gritting.
